The challenge

What made this project demanding

A large-format retail store trades continuously, holds a high fire load in stacked goods, and has significant public footfall — including people unfamiliar with the building. Protection had to work around trading hours, and the design had to account for storage heights that change what a sprinkler system must deliver.

What we delivered

Hazard classification drives the design

A retail superstore is not sprinklered like an office. Storage height, commodity type and rack configuration set the required density and the design area — get the classification wrong and the system is either inadequate or needlessly expensive. The design started from what is actually stored and how high it is stacked.

Evacuating people who do not know the building

Shoppers do not know where the exits are and will default to the door they came in by. Detection was paired with clear voice notification so an evacuation message directs people rather than simply alarming them.

Keeping the tills running

Server and electrical rooms were given clean-agent protection. Water in those rooms would stop trading as effectively as the fire.

Installed around trading

Work was sequenced by area and scheduled outside trading hours where it affected the sales floor, so the store did not lose days to the installation.

Outcome

Combined water-based and clean-agent protection with surveillance coverage, engineered around storage configuration and public evacuation, installed without interrupting trading.
